Remote sensing of changes in morphology and physiology of trees under stress
Measurements on foliage samples collected from several drought and salt treated plants revealed that leaf thickness decreased with increasing severity of the drought treatment and increased with increasing severity of treatment with NaCl, but remained essentially unaffected by treatment with CaCl2. Airborne data collected by multispectral scanner indicated that false color images provide selective enhancement of a diseased area. Comparison of simulated and actual aerial color and color IR photography revealed that the color renditions of the MSS simulations agreed closely with those of the actual photography

Recombinant gamma interferon induces hypertriglyceridemia and inhibits post-heparin lipase activity in cancer patients.
Animals suffering from malignancy or chronic infection develop characteristic metabolic abnormalities, including a well-defined hypertriglyceridemic state. These abnormalities have been attributed to release of one or more mediators from activated macrophages. We report that cancer patients receiving RIFN-gamma, a potent macrophage activator, at doses of greater than or equal to 0.25 mg/m2/d i.m. show marked increases in triglyceride but not in cholesterol levels (pretreatment triglyceride level of 180 +/- 190 mg/dl [mean +/- SD] vs. a day-14 level of 370 +/- 242 mg/dl, n = 23, p less than 0.001 by the paired t test). This hypertriglyceridemia was characterized by an increase in very low-density lipoproteins and a decrease in plasma post-heparin lipase activity, consistent with defective triglyceride clearance (mean pretreatment lipase level of 2.1 mumol/ml/h vs. a day-14 level of 1.2 mumol/ml/h, n = 6, p = 0.02 by the paired t test). rIFN-gamma did not directly inhibit lipoprotein lipase enzymatic activity in vitro. Other possible mechanisms of action, such as suppression of lipase by an rIFN-gamma-induced mediator released from activated macrophages, or a direct effect of interferon on lipase biosynthesis, require further investigation. Our observations provide evidence that factors produced by the immune system can regulate lipid metabolism in man
Considering the Case for Biodiversity Cycles: Reexamining the Evidence for Periodicity in the Fossil Record
Medvedev and Melott (2007) have suggested that periodicity in fossil
biodiversity may be induced by cosmic rays which vary as the Solar System
oscillates normal to the galactic disk. We re-examine the evidence for a 62
million year (Myr) periodicity in biodiversity throughout the Phanerozoic
history of animal life reported by Rohde & Mueller (2005), as well as related
questions of periodicity in origination and extinction. We find that the signal
is robust against variations in methods of analysis, and is based on
fluctuations in the Paleozoic and a substantial part of the Mesozoic.
Examination of origination and extinction is somewhat ambiguous, with results
depending upon procedure. Origination and extinction intensity as defined by RM
may be affected by an artifact at 27 Myr in the duration of stratigraphic
intervals. Nevertheless, when a procedure free of this artifact is implemented,
the 27 Myr periodicity appears in origination, suggesting that the artifact may
ultimately be based on a signal in the data. A 62 Myr feature appears in
extinction, when this same procedure is used. We conclude that evidence for a
periodicity at 62 Myr is robust, and evidence for periodicity at approximately
27 Myr is also present, albeit more ambiguous.Comment: Minor modifications to reflect final published versio
An aqueous non-heme Fe(iv)oxo complex with a basic group in the second coordination sphere
The Fe(IV)oxo complex of a coordinatively flexible multidentate mono-carboxylato ligand is obtained by the one electron oxidation of a low spin Fe(III) precursor in water
Cluster state preparation using gates operating at arbitrary success probabilities
Several physical architectures allow for measurement-based quantum computing
using sequential preparation of cluster states by means of probabilistic
quantum gates. In such an approach, the order in which partial resources are
combined to form the final cluster state turns out to be crucially important.
We determine the influence of this classical decision process on the expected
size of the final cluster. Extending earlier work, we consider different
quantum gates operating at various probabilites of success. For finite
resources, we employ a computer algebra system to obtain the provably optimal
classical control strategy and derive symbolic results for the expected final
size of the cluster. We identify two regimes: When the success probability of
the elementary gates is high, the influence of the classical control strategy
is found to be negligible. In that case, other figures of merit become more
relevant. In contrast, for small probabilities of success, the choice of an
appropriate strategy is crucial.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, contribution to special issue of New J. Phys. on

Aprotinin Inhibits SARS-CoV-2 Replication
Severe acute respiratory syndrome virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the cause of the current coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic. Protease inhibitors are under consideration as virus entry inhibitors that prevent the cleavage of the coronavirus spike (S) protein by cellular proteases. Herein, we showed that the protease inhibitor aprotinin (but not the protease inhibitor SERPINA1/alpha-1 antitrypsin) inhibited SARS-CoV-2 replication in therapeutically achievable concentrations. An analysis of proteomics and translatome data indicated that SARS-CoV-2 replication
is associated with a downregulation of host cell protease inhibitors. Hence, aprotinin may compensate for downregulated host cell proteases during later virus replication cycles. Aprotinin displayed anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity in different cell types (Caco2, Calu-3, and primary bronchial epithelial cell air–liquid interface cultures) and against four virus isolates. In conclusion, therapeutic aprotinin concentrations exert anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity. An approved aprotinin aerosol may have potential for the early local control of SARS-CoV-2 replication and the prevention of COVID-19 progression to a severe, systemic disease

District Health Managers' Perceptions of Supervision in Malawi and Tanzania.
Mid-level cadres are being used to address human resource shortages in many African contexts, but insufficient and ineffective human resource management is compromising their performance. Supervision plays a key role in performance and motivation, but is frequently characterised by periodic inspection and control, rather than support and feedback to improve performance. This paper explores the perceptions of district health management teams in Tanzania and Malawi on their role as supervisors and on the challenges to effective supervision at the district level. This qualitative study took place as part of a broader project, "Health Systems Strengthening for Equity: The Power and Potential of Mid-Level Providers". Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 district health management team personnel in Malawi and 37 council health team members in Tanzania. The interviews covered a range of human resource management issues, including supervision and performance assessment, staff job descriptions and roles, motivation and working conditions. Participants displayed varying attitudes to the nature and purpose of the supervision process. Much of the discourse in Malawi centred on inspection and control, while interviewees in Tanzania were more likely to articulate a paradigm characterised by support and improvement. In both countries, facility level performance metrics dominated. The lack of competency-based indicators or clear standards to assess individual health worker performance were considered problematic. Shortages of staff, at both district and facility level, were described as a major impediment to carrying out regular supervisory visits. Other challenges included conflicting and multiple responsibilities of district health team staff and financial constraints. Supervision is a central component of effective human resource management. Policy level attention is crucial to ensure a systematic, structured process that is based on common understandings of the role and purpose of supervision. This is particularly important in a context where the majority of staff are mid-level cadres for whom regulation and guidelines may not be as formalised or well-developed as for traditional cadres, such as registered nurses and medical doctors. Supervision needs to be adequately resourced and supported in order to improve performance and retention at the district level
XAS Characterization of a Nitridoiron(IV) Complex with a Very Short Fe-N Bond
X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been used to characterize the novel nitridoiron(IV) units in two [PhBP^R_3]Fe(N) complexes (R = iPr and CyCH_2) and obtain direct spectroscopic evidence for a very short Fe−N distance. The distance of 1.51−1.55 Å reflects the presence of an FeN triple bond in accord with the observed Fe_≡N vibration observed for one of these species (ν_(FeN) = 1034 cm^(-1)). This highly covalent bonding interaction results in the appearance of an unusually intense pre-edge peak, whose estimated area of 100(20) units is much larger than those of the related tetrahedral complexes with Fe^I−N_2−Fe^I, Fe^(II)−NPh_2, and Fe^(III)_≡NAd motifs, and those of recently described six-coordinate Fe^V≡N and Fe^V≡IN complexes. The observation that the Fe^(IV)−N distances of two [PhBPR_3]Fe(N) complexes are shorter than the Fe^(IV)−O bond lengths of oxoiron(IV) complexes may be rationalized on the basis of the greater π basicity of the nitrido ligand than the oxo ligand and a lower metal coordination number for the Fe(N) complex
